Curatorial Statement

🇷🇴 FEATURED ARTIST — ANA MARIA PANAITESCU @ana_maria_panaitescu— Romania Ana Maria Panaitescu's practice develops along a border: between textile and assemblage, inherited gesture and contemporary construction, the sacred and the ordinary. She does not treat these territories as separate disciplines, but as permeable zones where one material language gradually enters another. Her works are built through thresholds—grids, cavities, stitched surfaces, embedded fragments and layered reliefs. These structures hold memory without fixing it, allowing absence, rupture and continuity to coexist within the same visual field. In “Moștenire 2” and “Buzunarul de amintiri”, ancestral knowledge is not preserved as nostalgia, but reconfigured through contemporary form. This border is also material. Thread, plaster, earth, wood and found elements move between fragility and permanence, intimacy and structure. In “Earth Collection”, soil becomes a cartography of distant places; in “Potir”, rough matter is transformed into a vessel of spiritual resonance without losing its physical weight. White, central to Panaitescu’s visual universe, is never neutral. It acts as a surface of transition, intensifying shadow, relief and silence. Her dialogue with Byzantine heritage is therefore not illustrative, but structural: sacred archetypes are reduced, displaced and rebuilt through a restrained contemporary vocabulary. Across this selection, the border is not a line of separation, but a space of transformation. Panaitescu’s works remain suspended between matter and meaning, between what is remembered and what is still being formed. It is precisely within that interval that her art acquires its quiet, tactile power.
