THE ALCHEMY OF GRADUALISM Leah Sanata (b. 1973), an artist living and working in Dubai, brings structural discipline and emotional sensitivity into a practice shaped by time, colour and changing light. Her paintings occupy a space where careful construction and intuitive gesture become successive parts of the same process. Following an intensive period of self-directed study between 2019 and 2021, Sanata developed what she calls gradualism. Her surfaces begin with a pointillist matrix of pure pigment, followed by transparent glazes that may require weeks to cure. Scumbling and blending unify these layers before spontaneous impasto strokes introduce movement and physical intensity. The works selected for this feature reveal the range of that language. Botanical forms become luminous presences in Chrysanthemums. Three Suns and Narcissus. Three Views, while Reflection of Eternity opens onto a suspended world of water, lotus flowers and celestial spheres. Elsewhere, Paper Boat introduces vulnerability and contemplation, and The Lightness of Being uses butterflies and moonlight to suggest passage and release. Sanata structures her practice through focused projects and an evolving body of independent work known as The Archive, presented under the title Art Free of Prejudice. Her project Embraced by Flowers explored femininity and changing emotional states through the deliberate constraint of forty small-format rose paintings. Exhibited across Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East, Sanata's work demonstrates how patience can become intensity and how a carefully constructed surface can remain open, resonant and alive. Her paintings invite us to slow down and look again.
