On making without permission

At the base of any artistic practice there is a very simple condition: a hand, a surface, and no instruction that fully controls the outcome. Everything else comes later — context, audience, framing, validation. Before all of that, there is a moment that belongs only to you. It is small, and often overlooked because it doesn’t look like anything important yet. But this is where most things actually begin. Not in the finished object, but in the unobserved gesture that precedes it. What you do there is not measured. It doesn’t need to be. It only needs to happen.
