Curatorial Statement

Kiyo Aono's paintings inhabit the quiet territory between presence and absence — the emotional spaces where love, memory, longing and distance are felt more strongly than they can be explained. A self-taught oil painter based in Japan, Aono approaches contemporary figurative painting not simply through portraiture, but through moments in which something remains unresolved or unspoken. A gaze held slightly too long, a hand resting against another face, hair caught by the wind, or a figure dissolving into colour become ways of expressing emotions that resist direct description. This is especially present in Last Moment, where touch carries both intimacy and separation, and in Unspoken Distance, where the partially dissolving figure gives visual form to emotional absence. The two Before the Wind paintings create a quieter dialogue around connection and distance, while Dawn extends this exploration toward transition, fragility and choice. Across the series, recurring violets, blues and rose tones create a strong visual coherence, binding together works that move between tenderness, restraint and emotional tension. What makes Aono's work particularly compelling is the way these paintings seem to speak to one another: not as isolated portraits, but as different moments within the same emotional landscape. Throughout her work, emotion is rarely declared directly. Instead, it emerges through gesture, gaze, colour and the delicate distance between one moment and the next.
