Curatorial Statement

ECHOES — When Traces Become Art What remains after a painting is finished? For Athens-based visual artist Milena Dimitrokallis, the creative process does not end with the completed canvas. Every gesture, every accumulation of pigment, and every seemingly insignificant trace carries the possibility of becoming something new. Initiated in 2010, her ongoing research project ECHOES challenges the traditional boundaries of artistic creation. The cloths used to clean brushes and spatulas, normally discarded or overlooked, become the starting point for a new visual language. Through photography, these fragments of studio activity acquire an independent aesthetic presence, transforming the residues of painting into autonomous compositions. Rich in texture and chromatic intensity, these works reveal intricate landscapes of colour, movement, and material memory. Turquoise, crimson, magenta, and yellow intertwine with exposed textile fibres, creating unexpected relationships between gesture and matter. What appears spontaneous becomes a record of time, physical action, and the unconscious dimensions of artistic practice. Dimitrokallis's broader painting practice follows a similarly intuitive approach. Working directly on canvas without preliminary sketches, she allows colour, form, and emotional response to guide her compositions. Within ECHOES, this exploration extends beyond the finished artwork, questioning where creation begins, where it ends, and what remains between those moments. Presented internationally, including at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello in Venice and MUST Museo Storico in Lecce, ECHOES also incorporates participatory installations in which projected images, viewers' shadows, and reflective questions create new interactions with the work. Through this evolving dialogue, Dimitrokallis invites us to reconsider artistic value, revealing how even the most incidental traces can become meaningful expressions of memory, presence, and transformation. ECHOES reminds us that art exists not only in what an artist creates, but also in what the act of creation leaves behind.
