Curatorial Statement

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER THOMAS DIX @thomasdix.photography Germany 🇩🇪 Thomas Dix has spent decades observing how light, structure and perspective can transform the visible world. Born in Füssen, Germany, in 1959, he discovered photography during a stay in Paris in 1979–80 before studying Visual Communication and Photo Design in Dortmund. Since 1988, his professional practice has encompassed architecture, interiors, industry, landscape and nature, with a particular sensitivity to light and spatial construction. In his more recent artistic work, that disciplined photographic eye moves into a freer territory. The architecture remains, but increasingly as rhythm, geometry, colour and visual tension rather than documentation. Details detach themselves from their original context; reflections and surfaces become almost painterly; familiar structures are pushed toward abstraction. Works such as Grosse ROCHEade, Triangular Relations and The Trumpets of Jericho retain a strong sense of constructed space, while Waterworld, Yayoi Kusama Reloaded and Interference move further into optical ambiguity, layering and colour. Pet Sematary and Chasing the Horizon extend this exploration toward images in which photography becomes less a record of what was seen than a transformation of perception itself. There is a clear continuity beneath these shifts. Dix has long described photography through its original relationship with light: the act of “writing with light.” His practice depends on observation, patience, framing and the precise instant at which structure, shadow and perspective resolve into an image. What changes in this recent body of work is not that foundation, but the degree of freedom he allows the image once the visible world has been captured. The result is photography poised between architecture and abstraction, precision and disruption, recognition and invention.
